Mitchell Adult Learning Centre

The Richmond Board of Education is currently undertaking a seismic upgrade and partial replacement at Mitchell Elementary. The Board is considering retaining the south wing of the school, which was scheduled for demolition as part of the seismic project, in order to relocate the Rideau Park Adult Learning Centre to a proposed Mitchell Adult Learning Centre.

Richmond Continuing Education (RCE) programs and staff are currently spread out over seven locations. The Rideau Park Adult Learning Centre is the central facility for RCE and has been determined to be too small to service all of the growing needs of the program. It is restricted to weekday use from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. due to its location within a residential neighbourhood. It is also not located on a major bus route.

The Mitchell Adult Learning Centre would be physically separated and fenced off from Mitchell Elementary. Adult learners would not have physical access to Mitchell Elementary or the school grounds. The Adult Learning Centre would be accessible from Cambie Road and would be in close proximity to a major bus route. As such, the new location would be suitable to accommodate learning for all adults, including those who may require daytime, evening or weekend instruction.

The board will also be hosting a virtual public information meeting on May 11, 2021, at 5:30 p.m. Attendees will be given the opportunity to provide input and ask questions.
